This week finally felt like our prayers were being answered. His ongoing caseworker had been on unexpected personal leave for nearly two months. In the meantime, a new caseworker was provided… whom we saw once to meet the state’s monthly visit requirement. After that, it was silence.
Thankfully, his adoption caseworker (different from his ongoing caseworker) was still trying to proceed with everything that she could. She was able to obtain and provide me with the official medical records from this birth at the hospital. Until now, all I have had was his discharge paperwork and the verbal information that was provided. Most of what was in the documents I already knew, but some of the facts were clarified and elaborated upon. The papers portray pretty clearly what occurred during his birth and the few hours after. I sat beside him on the floor while I read through them and told him that when he is ready the papers will be here for him. While I do not look forward to the day I have to explain his birth story, I am grateful to have the documentation from the medical professionals for him to be able to read and see all the lab results and information for himself versus verbal recollection.
On Tuesday, I received a call in my cell phone and my heart jumped when I saw the name of his caseworker on the screen. Could it really be her?? She told me that she has returned and will be working diligently to get caught up to help us make our and the state’s goal of adoption before Lil G turns one. We really enjoy working with her and she adores Lil G, so it is truly a blessing to have her back and be able to see progress again.
She came to the house yesterday for the April monthly visit and let us know that it appears his birth certificate rulings have finally been settled and someone just has to actually go file for the birth certificate. It’s so crazy that a child can go this long without one, but it clearly happens! Once we have the birth certificate, we are really close to scheduling our final meeting that must occur before the adoption date can be set with the court. We should know in just a couple of weeks whether the June 8th adoption date is actually possible so he will officially have a name and be mine by his birthday on June 25th. I can’t think of a better present to give my little man.
In anticipation of June being a big month for us, we are anxiously preparing for a big celebration of his first year of life. I decided upon the theme of “A Wild One”…. I would say his first year has been quite a wild one! We are SO excited to get to celebrate and thank all of our friends and loved ones for helping us make it through this year.
Yesterday, we also discussed moving forward with genetic testing to find out his ethnicity. I joked with the caseworkers that his adoption/first birthday party might end up being an “ethnicity reveal” instead of the typical “gender reveal” parties.
Overall, we are just thrilled to be moving forward and blessed to be supported by our amazing friends and family!
